Gymnasts

This is an older piece that I made from a canceled edition of prints on wood. The figures of the gymnasts were from a step aerobics record I bought at a thrift store. They also happen to be one of the earliest motifs I used in screenprinting, as I used them for the WUSC-FM DIY or DIE fundraiser in 2005.

My technique for producing these individual mixed media pieces is to first print on the wood blocks individually as an edition. After this step is completed, I use a combination of stenciling and masking to paint in the rest of the piece, while leaving some elements of the wood grain in the final version. I really like the combination of screenprinting’s flat, clean lines with the texture of a hand-painted background.

Only a single piece was produced in this project, and that piece measures approximately 5″ x 5″.
