Nice Shoes…

Nice Shoes Card Set

For this project, I wanted to take a step towards producing more complex ephemera. One way to do that without getting too crazy was to print text on the front and inside of the card. As a result, this is the first print we ever produced which required some form of converting from original print to finished project.

First, we cut our press sheets to size and broke out the Gocco printer to print a pair of Converse All-Stars on each sheet. Afterward, we rolled out our black ink and warmed up the Chandler & Price letterpress while we hand-set some lead type to print the text. Using a work and turn style of printing, we were able to print each line of text individually, and then flip the sheet to print the inside text. Then, at last, we sat down to individually score and fold each card.

In terms of why we would choose to print a set of cards based on a lame pick-up line… well, it seemed like a perfect reminder of how important humor is to our process; I find it’s not a good idea to think too highly of one’s self, and it’s especially dangerous when you’re working with a populist medium like printmaking. Why make enemies before we even make friends?

Each set of 5 cards includes matching kraft envelopes, measuring approximately 4″ x 6″. This edition was printed on 100# opaque cover paper.
