Sabre Dance Invitations for Katie

Back when Vrooooom Press was just a glimmer in our collective eyes, we had an opportunity to print up some unique invitations for our friend Katie. Commissioned for a end of the school year celebration, these sabre dance invitations on oval cut matboard were the result! The printing is a little distressed due to the uneven surface of the matboard and our early inexperience with screenprinting, but we still like this project. Nonstandard ephemera is a great way to add something extra to a project without breaking the bank. I think way too many people have become blind to the the role print plays in their daily lives… how often do you receive a simple offset postcard with aqueous coating in the mail? It’s a reliable standard, but sometimes it might as well not exist at all due to its extreme popularity as a cheap production option.

A lot of our original attraction to working in ephemera is a response to the announcement that print is dead. Nothing could be further from the truth. Although it’s definitely important to consider cautiously whether or not your idea necessitates a printed project in the age of online newsletters and twitter updates, nothing impresses like having a physical object in your hands. Even a simple spot color piece can impress with a traditional print process, as it seems to break out of the two dimensionality of a monitor. Throw in a unique substrate or post-print process like die cutting, and the results can be both inexpensive and memorable for your audience!
